Geocache Description:

Post a photo of yourself at Stonehenge! (Please exercise caution along the roadways)

When I visited here in 2002, I logged this waypoint and established it as a virtual cache. That was more than 20 years ago!! That is a long time in terms of Geocaching, but not a long time in terms of what you will see here!

The coordinates shown above are for the nearby parking area. To get "credit" for being there, please post a photo (include yourself or a bit of you with a GPS if possible in the shot)at the Stones or at the parking lot near the above co-ordinates. (Please exercise caution along the roadways)

This site has been glorified for some 7000 to 8000 years.

If you are like me, this is a once in a lifetime chance to view the stones up close, so I paid the money. It is so neat to see this monument that I had only read about and seen on TV specials. My photos attached to this cache page are taken from within the outer "henge". I really enjoyed it.

In addition, let me give a Special Thanks to Shaggys Yorkshire Army for helping to keep this cache page current with recent construction at the site. Thanks and enjoy this wonderful place.

Update 6/28/15: The visiting center has changed and that there are now depictions of how the stones were transported. Photos of any of these are acceptable. Things here will continue to change as more and more people get a chance to visit. Please be respectful to the other visitors and those who may be working here.

Update 6/6/2022: More Changes to the area! The parking and walk to the stones is safer now and no pedestrian tunnels are needed. The self audio tour has improved too!

Again, Please mind the traffic and be careful near the cars and busses!

7/22/2024 Update - Myth: Stonehenge Was Built by Druids

So much about Stonehenge remains a mystery, from how its collection of bluestones were seemingly transported from hundreds of miles away to exactly why this famed monument was built. As such, it would seem appropriate that the druids, themselves a mysterious sect of Celtic priests, were responsible for the formation of what may have been a religious site. However, it’s likely a myth that the druids built Stonehenge. It turns out the idea was fostered by British antiquarians John Aubrey and William Stukeley in the 17th and 18th centuries, leading to a modern-day revival of druidry and the annual gathering of its practitioners at Stonehenge for the summer solstice. While it's unknown when the original druids first appeared, there are no records of their existence until around the first century BCE. Meanwhile, archaeological dating has shown that Stonehenge was constructed in several stages thousands of years earlier, between 3000 and 1500 BCE, making it highly unlikely that these shadowy shamans were involved.
