Geocache Description:

[ENG]

The cache is located WNW (west-north-west) from the centre point of the bridge. It is not located under the bridge (for safety reasons due to high currents at times). Very easy to find, but you can peek at the hint for absolute directions. It is a glass jar and contains a log book with a pencil supplied (but ensure to bring your own just in case, although it may not be necessary as it is maintained by the local children).

It is advised to be careful if you're intending to visit this during nighttime as the terrain becomes uneven along the river and there is fall risk if you don't watch your step, but this applies during daytime conditions as well.

Not much history is known publicly or even among the locals, but the river "Liepupe" (flowing directly into the Gulf of Riga) splits the Lembuži village into 2 areas (North and South), so a bridge is needed to connect both sides. The exact date of the bridge's original construction is not known, but it's believed that it has existed since at least the late 1800s because of an area just under a kilometer southbound from the bridge being dedicated to the construction of sailing ships from c.1870 - 1895. The bridge at the time may have been used to transport materials using horses across from the north, but it definitely predates combustion powered transport as the bridge's width appears to have accommodated horse carriages. A second path exists that has been used to cross the river just west of the bridge, but this appears to just having been a temporary path whilst the bridge underwent construction, and/or its subsequent repairs (last being preformed in August 2022 due to a few wood floorboards rotting away).

[LAT]
