Geocache Description:

Rõngu Issanda Taevaminemise koguduse kirik valmis 1868. aastal.

Üldse on õigeusu kirikul Eestis 17 pühakut.

Rõngu-Tilga õigeusu kogudus likvideeriti 1952. aastal. Tilga kirik lasti õhku 2. augustil 1965. aastal.

-----------

Rõngu Orthodox Church of the Ascension was completed in 1868. The congregation had two cemeteries, one next to the lutheran one, the other at Sikamägi, which is the highest point in the area (absolute height 89.9m).

In 1915-1916, St. Mihhail, civil name Mihhail Bleive (1873-1919), was the priest in the Rõngu Orthodox Church of the Ascension. In 1918, he became the high priest of Tartu Dormition Cathedral. Tartu fell to the bolsheviks in November 1918, and on January 14 1919, 19 people were killed in the basement of the Tartu Credit Center, the rest of the prisoners escaped. Among those killed were High Priest Mihail Bleive and Bishop Platon. Due to his martyrdom, Mikhail Bleive was canonized as a saint by the Bishops' Conference of the Russian Orthodox Church in 2000. In total, the Orthodox Church has 17 saints in Estonia.

The Röngu-Tilga Orthodox congregation was liquidated in 1952. Tilga Church was blown up on August 2, 1965.
