I was raised on a farm. We had cows, horses, pigs, goats, and chickens. It seemed like a lot of work at the time, but looking back now, it was a very rewarding childhood. I no longer live on a farm, so my choice of pets over the years has tamed a little bit, to dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, fish, and even a snake one time.
