Geocache Description:

One of intriguing events in the history of Camp Hearne was the murder of Hugo Krauss.  Krauss was born in Germany in 1919 and moved to the United States with his parents in 1928.  He returned to Germany in 1939 and eventually joined the German army.  He was captured in North Africa in 1943 and held as a POW at Camp Hearne.  Krauss was a vocal critic of the German government which brought him to the attention of a small but powerful group of hardcore Nazi party supporters.  On December 17 after lights out a group of those Nazi supporters attacked and beat Hugo, breaking several bones and fracturing his skull.  Hugo died several days later.

Excellent sources for more information regarding Camp Hearne are the books Lone Star Stalag and The Reluctant Warrior.
