CASA DO CONCELLO DO PORRIÑO

ANTONIO PALACIOS

The building that houses the offices of the Porriño council was designed by the Porriño architect Antonio Palacios, between 1919 and 1924. This building is part of the Galician regionalist style. It was decided to build it due to the poor condition of the previous town hall, Palacios would donate his work to the people of Porriño. The work in the center of the town stands out for its careful details such as the battlements that finish the towers, the lattices on the balcony or the semi-circular arches and cross vault on which it rests.
In 1976, a fire caused significant damage to the building, which was restored in 1980 with an extension and remodeling of the square where it is located.
Antonio Palacios
Antonio Palacios Ramilo (O Porriño 1874 - Madrid 1945) was one of the best Spanish architects of the turn of the century and first decades of the 20th. Porriñés by birth and Madrid by adoption, he will go down in history as the builder of the great buildings in Madrid such as the Palacio de Comunicacións, the Hospital de Maudes, but also some of the main buildings of Galician architecture of the first half of the century, such as the García Barbón Theater of Vigo, the Tempo Votivo de Panxón, the Vera Cruz Temple of Carballiño or even the design of Gran Vigo that would never be carried out.
Antonio Palacios maintained an important link with Porriño throughout his life. He had been born here, part of his family had continued to live here, and the architect visited Porriño frequently. He is also buried here, in the municipal cemetery, under a simple granite rock. Champion of Porriño granite as an architectural material, in Porriño he would also leave a very important part of his architectural heritage, through projects that he would design for free, in addition to the Town Hall building, the Fonte do Cristo, the Pharmacy of his brother and the Templete da Rede do Metropolitan transferred from Madrid.
