Geocache Description:

ALOHA!

Hawaii is not only known for sun, waves, and surf but also for excellent food, coffee, and Macademia nuts. I was on a cruise around the Hawaian islands with my BFF and we spent a few extra days afterwards to explore the area more extensively. We stumbled upon this patch of coast while new found geocaching friend, Cache_Lee, was taking us along this stretch of highway to show us caches and sights. I am very thankful to her for this opportunity to highlight a delicious snack, well known in Hawaii.

These popular nuts were first commercially produced on a wide scale in Hawaii from Australian seeds in the 1880s, where it is a native plant. Australia was the largest producer for some time but South Africa is now on the forefront since 2010.

The fruit is a hard, woody, globose follicle with a pointed apex containing one or two seeds. The nutshell ("coat") is particularly tough and requires around 2000 N to crack. The shell material is five times harder than hazelnut shells and has mechanical properties similar to aluminum. It has a Vickers hardness of 35.[9]
