There once was an air bee-n-bee, the cutest one I ever did see
It stood proud and tall, loved by creatures so small
And they provided a "smiley" for me!
You're looking for an item within the church parking lot, an easy park and grab. There's off street parking most of the time (as long as you're not there during Sunday morning service) but there's always street parking.
This is the site of the oldest church in the city of New Bedford, founded in 1696. Church records chronicle the history of the city parish, tracing their beginnings to 1696 when a small group of colonists formed the First Congregational Society.
Twelve years went by before they chose their first minister, the Rev. Samuel Hunt.
The first meeting house was erected in 1709 on property which is now Acushnet Cemetery.
In 1828 the church was reorganized by the last four members of the old church, and a second house of worship was built at Lund's Corner.
In 1865 it was destroyed by fire and burned to the ground. There was no insurance. Records show not one single word for two years after the fire. Then it states "Dedication of our new church in 1867. No debts against it.'"
In 1996 they celebrated their 300th year. This church has a deep and rich history, One of the past ministers was Rev. Cleveland, who was a descendant of President Grover Cleveland, and Rev. Pardon Seabury, who was part-owner of a whaling vessel and related by marriage to Lizzie Borden. Some of her cousins are buried in the church cemetery.
