Geocache Description:

For what it’s worth… (another protest)

This geocache replaces our original For what it’s worth… geocache placed on August 30, 2006.

The subject of this multicache is an almost anonymous sculpture at the busiest intersection in Antigonish.  It is the remaining sculpture of the twin sculptures that have witnessed parades and protests, celebration, and dissention. The stark presentation with which the pieces were erected are almost extensions of the works themselves. They are void of explanation, without plaque or title.

In 2006 I was able to interview the sculptor, Tom Forrestal, to obtain their background. Forrestal currently lives in Dartmouth and is one of Canada’s premier contemporary artists. He accomplished his formal education at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB under the guidance of renowned artist Alex Colville among others. His works hang in many corporate, government and private collections.

In 1972 artist and sculptor Tom Forrestal was commissioned to create two unique pieces for Public Works Canada to compliment the newly constructed Canada Post building on Main Street in Antigonish. The two core tin steel sculptures that were produced by Forrestal for the William Alexander Henry building were created at Horsenalls Machine Shop in Fredericton under the tutelage of what he terms “good old welders”.

Like all art, what they represent is in the eye of the beholder. It is evident however that the two pieces “reflect that time” in which they were created. “There was always a riot or group uprising somewhere"; "to protest for someone’s rights"; and "students protesting” says Forrestal.  "It (the sculptures) was not meant to be omnibus”, "but they don’t represent a single event" either. Forrestal says he "did not pin it down too closely”.

Upon his return to Nova Scotia, Forrestal was unable to secure facilities to continue sculpting so these became the last sculptures that Forrestal had created.

Seek the remaining sculpture at N 45' 37.314 W 61' 59.658. Find and record the raised inscriptions on the sculptures. To decipher the cache location, use the following cipher to discover the missing digits.

For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield

What a field-day for the heat

A thousand people in the street

Singing songs and a carrying signs

Mostly say, hooray for our side

It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound

Everybody look what's going down
