Geocache Description:

A Rock and a Hard Place - Part of our St Maurice Wander set of caches to explore the beautifully historical part of Plymouth - Plympton St Maurice which is the oldest part of Plymouth and where the first settlement was back in 899 AD.

This Cache is located at the base of Plymton Castle on School Lane with a name from the Old School House which can be seen trasformed into two beautiful homes at the end of School Lane. The Cache is located opposite what used to be the site of The Old Dairy where cows would be hearded in to be milked. Four homes now stand on this site, one of which is aptly named 'The Old Dairy'.

The date of the foundation of Plympton is not known but by the late Saxon period, it appears to have become a regionally important centre, mentioned in a charter of the West Saxon king Edward the Elder dating to the period 899-909 AD. At the time of Domesday Plympton was a rural royal manor and by 1100 it was confirmed in the ownership of the de Redvers family.

Make sure to take a stroll down Fore Street which is the town's main street. It is lined with mediaeval buildings, around thirty of which are either Grade II* or Grade II listed. The Grade II* buildings are The Old Rectory, the Guildhall and Tudor Lodge.
