BRIDGE HISTORY. In 1791, a crude wooden bridge was constructed at this site, repaired in 1803, 1811 and again in 1820. Later in 1820 a new bridge was built using the sound lumber from the old bridge for $133.00 by Wentworth Lord. It was again rebuilt in 1833. John Brown built a replacement for $234.00 in 1843. However, the bridge you see today was built in 1870 by Jacob Berry. The bridge had work done in 1954 and again in 1982-3. At a cost of $85000.00 Milton Graton and sons restored the brige. Most of the funding came from a summer resident Gordon Pope. Vehicular traffic over the bridge ended in 1989. AS you will see, the bridge recently had major repairs completed at a cost of $1.9 Million.
