The Woolwich Royal Arsenal has a 500-year history as a place where weaponry was developed, tested and manufactured. From its beginnings as a dockyard making ships for Henry VIII, it can claim a pivotal role in shaping the course of global history. It played an important part in developing the technologies of the Industrial Revolution and was central to British efforts in The First World War. The Royal Arsenal was known as the Secret City, a mysterious place, heavily guarded and surrounded by high walls and electric fences. It was a place of top-secret military operations, where the latest weapons and cutting-edge technology were developed and tested in utmost secrecy.
