Geocache Description:

Are you at a cemetery or a garden? How about both! Never knew this was here, right? Its bigger then you think from looking on the outside.

I have been granted permission by The Friends of the Whipps Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, Inc to place this cache here. Please treat the grounds with respect! The cache is reachable without going over any fencing/border. No need to step on any of the plants/flowers to reach it either. No need to disturb the tombstones/grave sites either. The hint should help you out if you are lost.

About Whipps Garden (from their site): “The Whipps Cemetery Garden educates and inspires Howard County residents to preserve old cemeteries as a small community park, showcasing local history and culture in the style of the famous garden cemeteries of the 19th century. At the Whipps Cemetery Park, Howard County Master Gardeners and community volunteers plant and maintain heritage and native species in a variety of different settings, interspersed by pathways, benches, angels, and around the tombstones. The plants are typical of those grown in Maryland gardens of the 1800s.”

After you find the cache, take a stroll! There are 18 numbered signs throughout the cemetery which takes you all throughout the gardens and provides you with a little teaching lesson. There are also paper pamphlets at some of those marked signs which have more information on the history of the gardens and even a list of all those buried here. There are 16 members of the Whipps family here, dating back to the earliest date of 1833. There are also 40 additional graves from the general public; last burial is in 1910. If you see a Maryland flag by the headstone it is to mark a child’s grave. All unmarked graves are marked with a cross on a white brick. It's really beautiful here any time of the season!
