Elephants are the world’s largest land animal known for their trunks, large ears and tusks made of ivory. A bull elephant stands about 3 meters high and can weigh on average up to 6,000kg. Baby elephants can weigh 120 kg at birth, are able to stand within 20 minutes, walk within an hour and keep up with the herd at two days old. Elephant's weigh less than a blue whale's tongue! They can live for up to 60-70 years.
An elephant's trunk is very sensitive, has about 150,000 muscle in it, no bones and weighs 91kg (200 lbs) . They use their trunks for many things, breathing, smelling, drinking, fighting and making noise. An elephant can hold up 8 litres of water in their trunk. They also use their trunks to trumpet when agitated or to snorkel when swimming. They can lift items as heavy as 350 kgs (770 pounds) or as small as a single grain of rice. Elephants also use their trunks to show affection. An elephant's hide is an 1' thick.
Elephants are extremely social, form close family bonds, take care of injured or weak members and grieve their dead.
