It's 1906 and Bert is part way through his apprenticeship at the Glasgow Sherbet Municipal Works, one of the largest producers of sherbet in the world. Bert is working hard in Powder Room B and decides to quench his thirst with a nice drink of pineappleade. Bert tries to pop open the lid of his glass bottle, but his sweat soaked hands lose grip and the bottle slides from his grasp. Bert sees it happen in slow motion, the glass bottle tumbling down towards the stone floor, he does his best to regain control of it, but has no success. SMASH. Glass flies everywhere, but more importantly so does his pineappleade.
A little-known fact about pineappleade is that when it is exposed to fresh sherbet powder, it produces and intense rapid expansion of material. A fact that Bert is soon to find out. As the pineappleade makes contact with the sherbet stored in Powder Room B, that rapid expansion happens in an instant. An explosion of sherbet-y foam can be seen all the way from Port Glasgow and sends poor Bert flying from the first floor, all the way in to Corrigans Grocer Shop next door. The explosion destroys a retaining wall between Glasgow Sherbet Municipal Works and the brewery next door, adding beer to the explosive mix. There is very little left of either building at this point, all of which (as well as all the neighbouring buildings) is covered in sherbet foam.
The local government rapidly steps into action and ships in school children from all across the city to eat their way through the mountains of sherbet foam. The children work nonstop to free trapped residents and clear the disastrous mess that Bert's small mistake has caused. The sherbet foam was eventually cleared up, as some serious cost to Glaswegian dental health, but the traces of sherbet can still be seen on the local buildings today.
