This is a two part cache. Rhodes has a very long and coloourful history with many different occupants over the years. In 1480, the Turkish army landed on Rhodes to try to wrest the city from the Knights of St John. According to some records, more than 100,000 Turks entered the battle which laster for several years. Many lives were lost and the Kokkini Porta (or Red Gate) was one of the sites that many clashes took place. this cache gives the opportunity to view the gate from a different perspective and reflect on this period of time.
There is a very interesting journey to find this cache. In the beautiful historical old town of Rhodes you will walk around the ancient walls and easily imagine the many battles and ancient trauma in the area. The fortified walls of the moat surround the old town and taking the time to walk through this amazing area will reap rewards for a geocacher.
