Prior to 2000, the US military created and deployed satellites to produce accurate location information for military applications. Selective Availability restricted precise GPS data to the US government. On 2 May 2000, the US government 'flipped the switch' and made accurate GPS available to all. As Geocachers, we call this day Blue Switch Day.
After the switch was flipped and GPS became available to the public, the first geocache didn’t take long to appear! Only one day later, the first geocache was hidden on 3 May 2000 and Geocaching was born!
Come and join us to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Geocaching and earn yourself the Big Blue Switch Day 2023 souvenir.
