The Pileated Woodpecker is Ohio’s largest woodpecker. These crow-sized birds are dramatically colored, with contrasting black and white feathers on the body and a bright red crest on the head. Males and females use these strong markings to impress each other in courtship displays. In 2010, paleontologists discovered that the feathered dinosaur Anchiornis, from 160 million years ago, had similar coloration.
