The Northern Cardinal is one of our most beloved songbirds. They are the State Bird of Ohio, along with six other states. These birds have a complex social structure, with access to food determined by age and sex. Adults pair up in the spring and the female builds the nest, with the male’s assistance. While she incubates the eggs and hatchlings, he finds food and protects the brood from predators. The male may even lose his bright red color during this time, in order to camouflage better while keeping watch.
