History
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, the Tudor Revival style chruch was built in 1914. This church replaced an earlier cobblestone church at the same location, that was built in 1843.
Formed in 1833, the First Presbyterian Church society consited of seven members, with meetings held at the local school house in Ontario Center. By 1840, the society was up to 38 members.
The land for the church was donated by Dr. Loammi Whitcomb, with an additional donation of $30, Other member donationed a total of $209. Cobblestone and sand for mortar were drawn from the lake, while stone was donated by Walter Cone, under the condition that the society pick it up themselves. Much of the labor and other materials was donated by locals.
By 1907, membership reached over 145.
By 1915, the old coblestone church was torn down and the new Tudor Style church as we know it today was erected, to the tune of $8,000.
At that time, the Rochester and Sodus Bay Trolley system ran along Ridge Road. The system used a 625-volt DC current with stations in Webster and Williamson and substations in Ontario and Sodus. The trolley had 144 stops between Rochester and Sodus Point. Orginally designed to handle a trolley every 5 minutes, there was only enough business to run every hour and by 1929, the trolley went out of business.
