Geocache Description:

Cathlaw Estate was an 18th century House and Estate created by the Hamilton family, originally from the Westport area of Linlithgow. The House was a traditional two and a half storey harled building. Most of the current building dates from 1840 but it's slightly irregular walls suggest it's earlier origins. It has ornate late-medieval fragments, thought to be taken from Edinburgh's St Giles Cathedral, which have been used to adorn the walls.

The estate does not appear to have ever been very large, and contained a quarry. Although it's difficult to be sure the quarry seems to appear on maps some decades after the house itself, possibly created in an attempt to increase estate income.  A further quarry appears very close by on Cairnpapple hill and the whole area has been mined for a wide variety of minerals in the last 400 years including lime, shale, coal, silver and building stone.

Today Cathlaw House is dividied up into private residences. The area of Cathlawhill is now light woods and some maintained paths.

Entry to the woods is via a style next to a farmer's gate, and that has been given as a waypoint on the cache page. A parking waypoint has been provided. There is a Bookmark List for this series of caches in The Bathgate Hills, here.
