Geocache Description:

This is not your usual cemetery (tube on the fence in the back corner) cache. I hope you can take the time to enjoy the tranquility of this sacred space.

Some interesting history about the area:

-the first person to be burried here was Anna Hurd in 1831. Her husband Aaron Hurd made his property at Lot 17 on  the 5th Concession in Reach available to area residents for burials. In 1862 the community realized it needed a proper cemetery and puchased 8 acres (includthe all the burial sites) from Mr. Hurd for $235. The funds were raised by selling shares at $5 a piece. It was named Ontario Pine Grove Cemetery.

-the first white settlers named the area Dayton's Corners. It was renamed in 1840 when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert, as a symbol of loyalty to the crown. You might not guess it today, but in the late 1850's  Prince Albert was by trade volume, the second largest grain handling center in Canada! The community was a thriving commercial hub with five hotels, a post office, a tannery, a school, many stores, three churches and several grain merchants.

Scugog Township is situated on the Treaty and traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.  The people of Scugog Township are humbled to recognize the many contributions made by the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples of Canada, and celebrate the historic foundation and many contributions from the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation to the Township.  We are grateful for the opportunity provided by this special place we all share, and we thank all the generations of people who have taken care of this land for millennia.
