Geocache Description:

The Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket is a rocket and jet powered supersonic aircraft that was the first aircraft in the world to fly at speeds exceeding twice the speed of sound (1,290mph). It was built by the Douglas Aircraft Company for the US Navy and for NACA (who we now know as NASA). The Skyrocket flew for the first time on February 4, 1948 by John F. Martin at Muroc Army Airfield (now Edward's Airforce Base). Three D-558-2's were apart of a 3-phase program and were the successors of the D-558-1. Although phase 3 never came to fruition, the combat-type aircraft intended design went on to get incorporated in the North American X-15. The D-558-2 became an important innovation in aircraft of its kind during its time. D-558-2 Skyrocket #1 is on display at the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, California. D-558-2 Skyrocket #2 is on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. #3, this sister aircraft here, as indicated by the nearby plaque, has been dedicated to the youth of Antelope Valley.
