Geocache Description:

Wow, what an epic trip of over 1500km across India!
Better pack your bags RK and make sure your vaccinations are up to date…

Oh wait, this cache is only a T2.0...there’s no such thing as an Aeroplane attribute...and the Long Hike (>10 km), Significant Hike and Tourist attributes aren't in play!

But what’s this?

It turns out a retired army officer also liked the idea, and recreated this epic journey in Mitcham in the 1880s when he named Delhi and Calcutta Streets (and the surrounding streets of the railway reserve).

… and even better, the Mitcham version is only 100m long!

🌳🌳🌳 The trees that you encounter on such a journey can have great significance 🌳🌳🌳

🌳 In Delhi, the Peepal Tree (Ficus religiosa) or Sacred Fig is highly regarded. Hindus consider the Peepal Tree to be auspicious because it represents the trinity of Bhrama, Vishnu, and Shiva. It's believed that watering, worshipping and circling the Peepal Tree will bring wealth, fame and an abundance of happiness and good luck.

🌳 In Calcutta, The Great Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) or Strangler fig is renowned as the world’s largest banyan. Apart from being religiously important, its continuous expansion represents eternal life.

The Great Banyan is estimated to be more than 250 years old, and towers over everything else at Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden. This single tree occupies an area of 4.67 acres.

🌳 In Mitcham, the Scrub Cherry (Syzygium australe) is a tropical Australian native. Its glossy, dark green leaves and bright red, emerging shoots are distinctive, and from February to April each year it also bears tart and tasty red fruit.

Cache information

On the Western side of the road, look to the Cherry’s canopy for your reward - be it either a tasty fruit or a sneaky bison.

***STEALTH ADVICE***
A small dog lives on the Calcutta Street corner and may be noisy at night if disturbed. Use the recommended parking and enter and exit from Delhi Street to ensure the quietest approach!
