Geocache Description:

22 July 2023, 12:00 - 13:00

People that have been to see the Eagle Lake & West Branch locomotives in the North Maine Woods want to go back. And people that haven't been yet are always wanting to go too. Well here is the latest opportunity you've been waiting for. I have led groups 5 times on every odd year since 2013. I know there are still folks that couldn't join us in the past but have wanted to. Now is your chance as we are going again.

Now before you say "Where do I sign up" there are a few things to keep in mind. This is not an easy peasy meet and greet by any stretch of the imagination. So if you think you are up for the challenge then please continue reading.

To start with you will have to drive a good distance on rough gravel logging roads. You may have a flat tire or 3 flat tires, just ask folks who have gone before. Then we will meet up and begin the hike to the event site. It is around 3/4 of a mile one way but it is fairly level terrain. There is a North Maine Woods gate fee you will have to pay to enter the area. This is truly a gem of a wilderness. You may see moose, deer, bear, or other types of wildlife. Or you may see none.  As those two mammoth locomotives come into view it makes for an awesome sight. There will be more details in the way of announcements as we get closer to the day. Please only post a will attend if you are seriously planning to go. The plan is to make it to the trains at noon. Spend some time socializing and exploring including a hike to where they have done a restoration of the original Eagle Lake Tram, the predecessor of the railroad, Then spend a couple of hours before we head back out exploring and getting some photos. We plan to be there on Friday night, camping at Big Eddy Campground at a group site. They do have a few cabins as well as tenting sites. You should plan for all weather conditions. There is no rain date. Car or Jeep pooling is highly recommended.

The day-use fees are $11.00 for Residents and $16.00 for Non-residents. Under 18 or over 70 they are free.https://www.northmainewoods.org/information/fees.html

I will have a Facebook page to coordinate camping. So if you are interested I suggest you contact me there or through my GC.com profile.
