GOVIND BHULA PARK
Located on the Hutt River Trail East Stopbank in Melling near the Ewen Bridge. the park is named for Govind Bhula, a former Lower Hutt City Councillor. Govind Bhula was also a member of the first New Zealand Indian Hockey team.
In 1997 when Lower Hutt designated a new riverbank park the council wanted to name it after the recently deceased Diana, Princess of Wales. However, it was lobbied to name the park after, the then deceased, Govind Bhaga Bhula (1933-1989). After a period of public debate the park was officially named Govind Bhula Park by the council in 1998.
In 2011, it was proposed to relocate the Melling Skate Park to the Govind Bhula Park site to decrease vandalism. This did not eventuate.
Recently, recycled plastic seat benches have been installed to show the public how their recycling is being used in and around the Hutt Valley.
