ABOUT THIS INVENTION: GARAGE DOORS

Can you imagine a garage without a garage door that opens upward? Who invented the upward opening garage door? A Michiganer. That's right. I have lived here all my life and have opened garage doors upward nearly every day since high school. I never asked that question. C.G. Johnson invented the first upward-acting garage door in 1921. The upward-acting garage door allowed for more room around the entrance of the garage to put your grill, store bikes and chair, extra parts to cars and other things that you don't want inside the house. The company that founded is still around and it is called, Overhead Door™.

C.G. Johnson invented the first electric garage door opener only five years later. I guess that he was tired of lifting that door himself. Note that the 1926 electric garage door opener was not something you could open remotely. I am sure that it was quickly ruled out that having a switch on a cord in your Model T was not practical to most. Put together a garage door that I own and you should be able to use that old bike behind one of those doors to get to this cache. I would dare say that this garage door is easier to put together than the door in the photo.
