Geocache Description:

A wonder around this lesser visited village adjoining Berwick-upon-Tweed. Spittal takes its name from a Medieval Hospital dedicated to St Batholomew ( founded in AD1234) to care for lepers. The location of this hospital is not known for sure. Historically it has also been a centre for Herring fishing with facilities for curing and smoking the fish. A lot of industry within the village also built up around manure and gas works - smelly yuk. Now all that has stopped thankfully.  Although there are still areas, not built on, that possible date from these activities . By the mid 1800s the village became favoured as an area for seawater bathing and its was believed a nearby mineral spring could sort out all manor of aches and pains.Today the Promenade is still a lovely place to take a stroll and the beach can be a hive of activity especially at weekends and holidays. It is doggy friendly so a great place for geohound and kids.  Now we have not given you the clues in any order - we are wicked like that!! This is a good one for bikes, buggies and wheelchairs. There is loads of free parking in the village.
