Geocache Description:

Claibourne Cemetery (pronounced CLAY-bern by the locals) is located 2 miles south of Richwood on State Route 37 in Claibourne Township, Union County. It is the primary location of interment for residents of Richwood and the immediate surrounding area.

The cemetery dates back to c1842. Originally associated with Bethlehem Methodist Protestant Church, this property was originally owned Henry Swartz, then by Jacob C. Sidle, who donated an acre of land for the use as a cemetery. The church no longer stands (see picture) but the cemetery endures.

If you have time, visit the mausoleum, which is unlocked during daylight hours. It is a peaceful place and is comfortable during the hot summer months. Mausoleums are becoming a rarity in small township cemeteries. Nowadays, Claibourne has maybe one entombment in here every five to ten years or so.

The cache is located in the oldest section – the original Sidle acre. Cemetery closes at dusk; please be respectful of the permanent residents. There is a special prize for FTF and STF!

Congrats to DisneyNuts4 on the {FTF}
