Get ready to seek out some gold... Fool's Gold that is! This is part of the state park, so day use fee's are collected and this alluring trail is open from 8 am - 6 pm along the American River. In order to park, you must have a day use permit or a park pass that can be purchased just across the bridge from where this is located at the Gold Discovery Museum.
The hike out to the location is not that difficult but it is especially beautiful. GZ is kayaker friendly and a great spot to watch paddlers practicing ferrying, eddies, rolls, and tailies.
You won't have to go too far off the main trail and there is a little path about 10' before the hide, heading to the right (going downstream) leading to the cache's hiding spot. Tread lightly, poison oak is around and abound.
Don't go up the ravine (poison oak!). Remember, there is always an easier way there.
Be prepared with some patience though! Once you get to the cache the challenge is just starting. It may take some time to figure out the field puzzle. Finding a pretty spot to solve it should not be hard. There is a map to help solve the puzzle with other prizes inside the the camo box.
Above all, have fun and enjoy this stretch of the river.
