宇都宮の旅籠屋（旅館）に生まれた枝源五郎は、宇都宮城下の人々から３年がかりで寄付を集め、安永７年（1778）、慈光寺に山門（仁王門）を造りました。山門は赤く塗られていたので、通称「赤門」と呼ばれていました。この赤門は、昭和２０年（1945）７月の宇都宮大空襲によって焼け落ちてしまいましたが、今でも「赤門通り」という愛称が残っています。
慈光寺の境内には宇都宮七水の天女水が湧き出ています。

2023年 栃木県民の日
栃木県民の日に制定されている6月15日は1873年に旧栃木県と宇都宮県が合併し栃木県が誕生した日です。この日を記念して、2023年の県民の日に栃木にゆかりのあるジオキャッシャーが募りキャッシュを公開しました。

Born in Utsunomiya to Hatagoya (Japanese Hotel), Eda Gengoro spent three years collecting donations from the people of Utsunomiya Castle to build a gate (Niomon) at Jikoji Temple in 1778. The gate was painted red and was commonly called "Akamon (red gate). The Akamon was burnt down in an air raid on Utsunomiya in July 1945, but it still retains the nickname "Akamon Street.
