Geocache Description:

Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club

In 1929 Mr Malcolm Maclean who had been farming an area of land at Paraparaumu decided to subdivide part of his land that fronted on Paraparaumu Beach. He and a Mr George Nathan formed a small syndicate which included Messrs Paterson, Francis, Chalmers and Whyte (some of these names are also local street names) to purchase the land. 200 acres of Beach Front was subdivided into seaside sections and the balance of 120 acres formed into an 18 hole golf course as an added attraction to buyers.  After all the sections had been sold Messrs Paterson, Francis and Whyte formed a club to take over the Golf Course from the syndicate and ensure the retention of the Golf Course which had become so much of a part of the life of the rapidly growing seaside resort.

Paraparaumu Beach Golf Course is a traditional links course.  It was designed in 1949 by former Australian Open champion, Alex Russell.  The club has hosted the New Zealand Open Championship 12 times, a record unsurpassed.  Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club has ranked as highly as 71st in the world, however, many of the world's top professionals have rated it more of a challenge than that.  Golfers from Gary Player to Peter Thompson, Bob Charles to Michael Campbell, Greg Turner to Peter Fowler and Tiger Woods in 2002 have all played this course.

This location is an alternate access to the course rather than the usual main front gates on Kapiti Road and provides a nice view of the clubhouse and some of the course fairways and greens.  There is good parking nearby.

The cache is not on the grounds of the course. It is placed with the landowners knowledge and permission. It is a plastic container easily reached from the road side.

Please bring your own pen.

This is my first cache I have placed. Enjoy
