It was the morning of January 13, 2018. Everyone in the state of Hawaii received the infamous text message, "BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL." It was then an agonizing hour before we were told that there wasn't really a missile. Wow! I spent that hour texting and calling all my loved ones and saying "good bye!"
To help me recover from the trauma, my husband suggested that we go fishing off the cliffs at the foot of Kahakai Blvd. I reluctantly agreed and when we got there I was still feeling super messed up, until...THAR SHE BLOWS!!! I witnessed a beautiful, majestic humpback whale fully breach the water! This was my first whale sighting and it completely cured me of all my trauma! What a gorgeous creature and magical experience!
These cliffs are excellent for humpback whale spotting from December to April, and the cove is also a popular hangout for green sea turtles year round.
