Geocache Description:

LV:

ENG
Temple Hill is a mound in Alūksne, on the peninsula of the southwestern shore of Lake Alūksne. This mound is the highest point of Alūksne. It is an ancient Latgali mound and the site of an ancient city.
The surface area of the mound is 80x40 meters. A 3-meter embankment was built in the eastern part. There are two more 2-meter-high ramparts from the plain to the northeast, which pass into terraces towards the west. In the north, a wide outer moat extends behind the last rampart. On the western side, the plain is closed by a small embankment.
A protected archaeological monument of national importance since 1998.
Temple hill is the oldest inhabited place in Alūksne district, on the top of which there is the Slava temple - a granite rotunda. In 1807, the owner of the Alūksne manor, Alexander von Fitinghoff, had a granite rotunda - the Temple of Glory - built on its top, in honor of the events of the Great Northern War in Alūksne. The classicist rotunda is dedicated to the memory of Russian Field Marshal Sheremetyev and Swedish Army Captain Wolf. In 1937, the city's tourism and amenities committee started the construction of tourist facilities on Temple Mount. One of the objects was an air bridge made of concrete and wood, which was named the Sun Bridge after the results of the announced competition. In 1995, the bridge was restored.
Among the many stories, one of the most popular says that during the Northern War, the warriors carried the Temple Mount with their hats so that they could better fire at Alūksne Castle on the island of the lake. It is known that the construction of the bastions of the Alūksne fortress began here before the Great Northern War, according to the project of Erik Dahlberg, the Governor General of the Swedish Vidzeme.
