Il Baluardo Cornaro fa parte della seconda generazione dei bastioni di Padova assieme alle altre fortificazioni poligonali. Citando www.muradipadova.it , è “il primo e il maggiore dei due grandi bastioni progettati per Padova dall'architetto veronese Michele Sanmicheli. Eretto nel 1539-1540, quand'era capitano di Padova Girolamo Cornaro, da cui prende il nome, rimane più un pericolo che una difesa per la città fino al 1556, quando è completato il terrapieno interno, allargando la fossa (il terreno allagabile in caso di attacchi militari) sui fianchi”. Gli angoli sono rivestiti in pietra, la fossa è sostanzialmente intatta e sul lato meridionale ci sono dei resti di una cornice in pietra d’Istria che quasi sicuramente conteneva un leone marciano. Baluardo Cornaro is part of the second generation of the ramparts of Padua together with the other polygonal fortifications. Quoting www.muradipadova.it, it is “the first and largest of the two big bastions designed for Padua by the Veronese architect Michele Sanmicheli. Built in 1539-1540, when Girolamo Cornaro was captain of Padua, from which it takes its name, it remained more of a danger than a defense for the city until 1556, when the internal embankment was completed, enlarging the ditch (the floodable land in case of military attacks) on the flanks". The corners are covered in stone, the pit is substantially intact and on the southern side there are the remains of an Istrian stone frame which almost certainly contained a Marcian lion.
