Geocache Description:

GALEGO

ANTONIO PALACIOS

TEMPLE OF THE NETWORK OF SAN LUIS DE MADRID
This remarkable work was commissioned by the Compañía del Metropolitano Alfonso XIII to the Porriño architect Antonio Palacios. This Temple of the San Luis Metro Network is built as an access to the first line of the Madrid metropolitan network, to North-South, inaugurated on October 17, 1919. The project was embodied in the form of a granite temple, covered by an iron and glass canopy. It began to serve on November 18, 1920 and could be used, thanks to an elevator ticket at the additional cost of five peseta cents (1/3 of the ticket price in 1919). It was in operation in the middle of the Plaza from 1920 to 1970, the year in which it was dismantled and in 1971 it was moved to the east town hall.

In 2018 the Community of Madrid decided to make a replica of it and place it practically in its original place, and it was inaugurated in 2021. The assembly is identical to the original from 1920 and granite from O Porriño was used for the construction, the same material that was used at the time and the metal canopy was also installed.

ANTONIO PALACIOS
Antonio Palacios Ramilo (O Porriño 1874 - Madrid 1945) was one of the best Spanish architects of the turn of the century and the first decades of the 20th century. Born in Porriño and adopted from Madrid, he will go down in history as the builder of the great buildings in Madrid such as the Palacio de Comunicaciones, the Hospital de Maudes, but also some of the main buildings of Galician architecture from the first half of the century, such as the García Barbón Theater in Vigo, the Votive Time in Panxón, the Temple of the Vera Cruz in Carballiño or even the design of the Gran Vigo that would never be carried out.

Antonio Palacios maintained an important link with Porriño throughout his life. Here he was born, here part of his family had continued to live and the architect visited Porriño frequently. It is also buried here, in the municipal cemetery, under a simple granite rock. Defender of Porriño granite as an architectural material, he would also leave a very important part of his architectural heritage in Porriño, through projects that he would design for free, in addition to this Temple, the Town Hall building, Fonte del Cristo, his brother's Pharmacy.
