March railway station was once a major junction, with lines to Spalding, St.Ives and Wisbech, and the railway brought a great deal of work to the townspeople in the 19th and 20th centuries. Naturally, from this environment developed leisure and social activities.

In the 1920s, the GER (Great Eastern Railway) acquired a plot of land here on Robingoodfellows Lane, which was initially home to a bowl’s club and their works football team, March GE United. The ground started greyhound racing in 1931, with the first winner being a greyhound called Theaker.

After the war, the railwaymen decided to build a clubhouse to create good relations between them and the townsfolk of March; the building was finished in 1947.

Meanwhile, March Town football club, established in the 1880s, were based south of the river at The Avenue on Burrowmoor Road, a ground they shared with the cricket club. After the building of the clubhouse, March Town transferred to the club grounds, and in 1950 were renamed March Town United to reflect the move.

In the 1960s, alterations were made to the ground to accommodate changes in the greyhound track. This resulted in the main football stand being moved further away from the pitch and positioned off centre, which did not please the football fans! Greyhound racing here finished in 1984.
