The Church of St. Michael and All Angels is the Anglican parish church for Chaffcombe and is a Grade II listed building.
The first church in this village was recorded as being in use in 1187, however, the current building was originally built in the 15th century and, although mostly rebuilt between 1857 and 1860, the tower still dates from this earlier time.
The building, which has several gargoyles, has a hamstone dressing and a tile roof, whilst the three-stage tower is supported by offset buttresses. Inside there is a three-bay nave and two-bay chancel, and an early, undecorated, font on a cylindrical stem which pre-dates the current building.
The church has its own car park which tends to be empty when the church is not in use.
Multi-Cache Instructions:
1) Towards the front end of the church is an unusual rectangular grave of Vincent Harris, Royal Academician. His dates are 187A to 197B.
2) Nearby is the grave of John Greenham Vincent of Woodhouse. His wife, Lucy, was C6 years old when she died.
3) Around the other side of the church building is a bench honouring Barbara and Tony Morris, who lived 192D-2018 and 19E3 to 2007 respectively. Whilst you are here, take a look at the old metal grave markers - I'm not sure of their story, but I think they are probably special in some way.
4) Lastly, follow the church back around and go to the graves at the very, very back. You will find F unusual curved grave stones for the Neale family, one of whom died in World War II and another who was a CBE. Morley Havelock Neale was G2 years old when he died.
