Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the Saum Creek Avian series and is placed just off the Saum Creek Greenway path, a pleasant forested trail along the creek behind a residential area. Bring your own writing implement.

Unlike the other birds in this series, the pileated woodpecker is a very large bird -- the largest of all the woodpeckers, at almost 20" tall. It is likely the basis of the cartoon character "Woody Woodpecker." It is mainly black, with a red crest and a white line down the sides of its throat. Pileated woodpeckers often chip out large holes in trees while searching for insects, especially ant colonies. They are a rare but magnificent sight -- and they are also loud: if you hear a loud squawking in the woods but see nothing, you may be close to an elusive pileated woodpecker.

Remember to note the color of the cache container -- you'll need that information to find the final cache in this series, GCA89GT "Avian Abode."
