ENGLISH
The current appearance of the Church of San Martino in Lughignano is the result of numerous changes over the centuries.
A small sacred building was probably already present at the end of the 11th century, but the first written testimony dates back to 1297. The bell tower, on the other hand, is documented in 1490 and must have had a similar appearance to the current one. As reported by the column in front of the church, the cemetery was blessed in 1555 and still exists: a curious exception to the edict of Saint-Cloud of 1804 which forced the transfer of burials outside inhabited centres.
In 1923 the church was restructured and enlarged in neo-Romanesque style, acquiring the current facade and side naves. In addition to the bell tower, the medieval parts still visible are the apse and a mutilated fifteenth-century fresco under the portico, depicting the Madonna and Child and two hardly recognizable saints.
When the hunt is over, I suggest you reach the Sile river and continue along the route: the landscape is beautiful and full of interesting places :)
