Geocache Description:

Can be reached easily by driving a car. No special equipment is necessary for this short hike. Interestingly hidden area. Great cache to visit if you’re into history.

From what has been recovered at this site, it appears that the area was used throughout the prehistoric period up to 10,000 years ago. Some artifacts have been found dating back to the Paleo-Indian period. The Paleo-Indians were nomadic people who moved around hunting the late Pleistocene mammals such as the bison, camel, deer, and elephants. When the climate became drier and many large mammals became extinct, pre-historic man changed his lifestyle, resulting in the Archaic culture. The Archaic people were hunters and gatherers who utilized the resources of their environment as they became plentiful according to the seasons.

Those people would travel throughout the region feeding on nuts, acorns, deer, fish, shellfish and migratory birds as these diverse foods reached their yearly peaks of abundance. Although the majority of the stone tools found at this site are from the Archaic period, some Paleo-Indian artifacts have also been reported. In addition, the presence of pottery at this site indicates that later people also lived here.

The development of pottery is indicative of a more sedentary way of life and marks the end of the Archaic period. Most of what has been found at this site includes stone tools as well as scrapers and cutting tools used to make those tools. In addition to living here, there is evidence that prehistoric people were also manufacturing tools in this area.

This site seems to be a very rich site with artifacts representative of many different time periods. It is a significant find in the State. Before posting your find, please e-mail a message to me describing the trail going to this cache as well as what you saw. DO NOT be tempted to do any artifact hunting of your own - you will be arrested!
