Welcome to Whitmore Nature Preserve. This is a beautiful nature park near the community of Whitmore Lake, hence the name. The park sits on land donated to Washtenaw County by landowners in the area and is used for preservation/conservation of natural land including all the flora, fauna and wildlife. The overall property is an amalgamation of a few different properties donated by very generous folks in the area and you will see on the main signs exactly who donated what land. The park hours are dawn to dusk so please do not attempt at night. Anyways, this particular nature area contains around 1.8 miles or so of unpaved trail system that manuevers around the property. At the entrance to the park sits the main trail that goes for about half a mile until you arrive at a open, hilly, grassland. This is where the trail splits to the left and right as the red trail. If you go on the right path, you will make your way up the hill to the next trail marker where this splits into the green and blue sections of the trail. Further North the trail branches off, this is the yellow loop.
So this cache will kick off my Unappreciated Nature Park series which will contain hides at various nature parks, preserves, or natural areas that aren't visited very often. These public places are nice areas to walk your dog, enjoy nature, and get some steps in, among other things. Please do not ride your bike in the park. This series' goal is to expose these beautiful hidden gems to more folks in the area. Most of the hides will be in Washtenaw County but some may be in Oakland and Livingston Counties. There will be a total of about 10 caches in the series and there will be no final. Have fun with these yall and enjoy these parks!
So, GZ brings you to a right turn in the trail. There is a fence just south and east of the bend that delineates the property line. Please do not cross this fence as it is private property so you would be trespassing. There are signs that mark the property line as well so please be careful. Anyway, the cache is on the fence line so you will not need to cross it to retrieve it. It is super small so not large enough to hold any toys or trinkets this time. Also, please be stealthy as there are others that visit this park sometimes, so please hide the cache back well. It is a very good idea to bring bug spray if you are attempting this in the summer/fall months as it can get quite buggy out here. Be sure to wear boots or shoes that can get dirty as there are quite a few muddy spots on the path. The hide is also on top of a decent sized berm so it will require a brief climb but it is not too bad at all. Good Luck and Happy Caching :)
