Johnnie Johnson Mural, Loughborough
This eye catching mural by Buber Nebz (real name Dan Smith) graces a building at the junction of New King Street and Great Central Road.
It depicts Air Vice Marshal James Edgar ‘Johnnie’ Johnson who was born in Barrow upon Soar and attended Loughborough Grammar School. After graduating as a civil engineer from University College Nottingham, he was initially articled to the borough surveyor of Melton Urban Council before joining the RAF in 1939.
As a Spitfire pilot he flew more than 700 combat missions and shot down 38 German aircraft (the highest score of any RAF pilot). Johnson died in 2001 leaving money in his will for the benefit of pupils at his old school. This is one of a collection of murals around the town depicting famous local people.
