Welcome to Fahnestock State Park! These 15 geocaches (10 challenge, 5 bonus) will take you on a virtual tour of some of the state parks and historic sites in the Taconic Region. We recommend completing the series in order, with numbers 1-10 of the challenge geocaches. The bonuses will be interspersed throughout. Lake Taghkanic State Park, nestled next to Lake Taghkanic in the rolling hills and lush forests of Columbia County, offers a wonderful variety of recreational activities. The park has tent and trailer campsites and cabin and cottage lodging facilities. Large trucks, RVs and campers can enter from the Route 82 entrance. The park also features a swimming beach, picnic areas, boat launch sites, rowboat, paddleboat and kayak rentals, playgrounds, sports playing fields, a rentable pavilion, as well as a recreation hall and showers. The geocache is not at the posted coordinates. This cache is a field puzzle that is based on natural, but man-modified, features adjacent to and on the south side of the trail in the vicinity of the posted coordinates. Some of the features are to the east (uphill) — they will provide you with the north coordinates. Others are to the west (downhill), they will provide you the west coordinates. You may read the coordinates from the features from an appropriate perspective in natural order. Please do not rearrange or move the features. Guidance on what the features are and how they appear from the trail can be found in the photo gallery. The final is a lock-and-lock hidden in typical fashion, consistent with the theme of the puzzle.
