Sir John Johnson, the son of Sir William Johnson was forced to take flight from Johnson Hall in 1776 amid the turmoil of the American Revolution. John remained loyal to the British Crown, which was very dangerous in the Mohawk Valley as it erupted in rebellion. Johnson fled with dozens of followers, many of whom would never see their homes in the area again. He would return during the war several times, but as a leader of military campaigns against former neighbors, friends, and family.
