Despite the name “Buried Forest Concretions Trail”, you actually won’t find any remnants of a forest on this family friendly hike. What you will find along this 1.8 mile round-trip trail is pieces that help tell the story of when this area was under a shallow sea 90 million years ago.
As you set out on your hike it will be hard to miss what resembles the cross section of large trees tucked in the hillside. These large round rocks, known as concretions, are nature’s way of preserving our geological past and are thought to be the result of mineral deposits that have been glued together by groundwater over time. These concretions are truly larger than life, some of them measuring over six feet in diameter and are something you will want to see to believe.
