Geocache Description:

The posted coordinates are bogus. If you looked for the cache at the posted coordinates you would just get wet.  The real coordinates are of the form

N52 A.B   W106 C.D

where:

  • one of A, B, C, D is a square, one is a cube, and one is a prime number;
  • the square is one more than the cube;
  • the prime is one more than the number you get when you add up all the numbers from 1 up to the cube;
  • the fourth number plus the cube is 11 times the prime.

You should be able to find the real coordinates with this information keeping in mind that the cache can't be too far away from the posted coordinates, and the cache is hidden in an easily accessible public place.  In particular, the cache is not on university property closed to the public.

That said, and just for fun, here are some further facts about the numbers A, B, C, and D:

  • The prime is the fourth number in a sequence concerning hexagons, where the first is 1, the second is 7, and the third is 19, ... (draw some hexagons using dots).
  • The fourth number of the coordinates (not the square, cube, or prime, but the other one) is an interesting number.  It is the smallest number N that satisfies the following:
    • it is odd and the product of distinct prime numbers (no squares); and
    • for each prime p that divides N, p + 1 divides N + 1

Weird, eh?  There are only 2 numbers less than 1000 that satisfy these conditions, and only 60 less than one million that do.  So it looks like  there aren't many numbers like the one we're looking for, and yet it turns out that there are infinitely many numbers overall that satisfy these conditions, something that was proved in 2016.  Wow!

This cache is for the SCAR event, and should not be sought out until after 5:30 pm on May 26th.  Anyone caught looking for this cache before that time will be taken to SAGA headquarters and placed in the famous SAGA stocks at which time members of the association will be free to throw tomatoes at the perpetrator.  This barbaric ritual should have been discontinued long ago, but sadly it remains an option for unhappy Saskatoon geocachers.
