3rd Street SE "Green" Bridge

In 1917 the Bremer County Board of Supervisors commissioned the Illinois Steel Bridge Company of Jacksonville, Illinois, to construct a Pratt through truss bridge across the Cedar River at this location. The bridge's simple design included three 120-foot spans and was partially funded by citizens of this neighborhood who wanted a shorter route to downtown Waverly. After nearly 100 years of service, the bridge (known locally as the "Green Bridge" for its paint color) was closed in 2015 and removed in 2021. Go-Hawk Manufacturing, a student-run company at Waverly-Shell Rock High School, created the base for this plaque using metal salvaged from the bridge.
