Stop 3: Rattling Run Falls This Cache

Many tributaries cut through the, like Rattling Run Falls. It is a stunning example of a stepped cascade. The water here falls over beds of rock from the Mauch Chunk formation. The layers of sandstone are cross-bedded, meaning they were deposited on a nearly flat plane, but the beds below were laid down on a sloping surface, rather like brush strokes going one way and then another way on a canvas.

6.8 miles further down the trail, Buttermilk Falls is another striking cascade over the same Mauch Chunk sandstone.
