Originally established in 1897, the zoo was located on the estate of Groote Schuur, a grand residence owned by Cecil John Rhodes. It began as a private menagerie, displaying a small collection of exotic animals for the amusement of its wealthy owner and his guests.
Over time, the zoo expanded its collection and opened its doors to the public. It became a popular attraction, showcasing a diverse array of wildlife species from Africa and around the world. The zoo's mission was not only entertainment but also education and conservation.
Throughout its history, the Groote Schuur Zoo faced numerous challenges and transformations. It underwent renovations and expansions, adapting to changing societal attitudes towards animal welfare and conservation. However, in the late 1970s, due to financial difficulties and concerns about outdated facilities, the zoo closed its doors permanently.
Today you will need to find a small bottle hidden behind some metal looking over the lions den. Please place back in the same spot and ensure it is well hidden as this is a visited spot.
